Cutting Sequences and Palindromes
We give a unified geometric approach to some theorems about primitive elements and palindromes in free groups of rank 2. The geometric treatment gives new proofs of the theorems. This paper is dedicated to Bill Harvey on the occasion of his 65th birthday.
متن کاملPure O-sequences: Known Results, Applications and Open Problems
This note presents a discussion of the algebraic and combinatorial aspects of the theory of pure O-sequences. Various instances where pure O-sequences appear are described. Several open problems that deserve further investigation are also presented. Dedicated to David Eisenbud on the occasion of his 65th birthday
متن کاملWord Sequences and Intersection Numbers
There are certain sequences of words in the generators of a twogenerator subgroup of SL(2,C) that frequently arise in the Teichmüller theory of hyperbolic three-manifolds and Kleinian groups. In this paper we establish the connection between two such families, the family of Farey words that have been used by Keen-Series to understand the boundaries of the Quasifuchsian space of surfaces of type...
متن کاملEnumerating Palindromes and Primitives in Rank Two Free Groups
Let F = 〈a, b〉 be a rank two free group. A word W (a, b) in F is primitive if it, along with another group element, generates the group. It is a palindrome (with respect to a and b) if it reads the same forwards and backwards. It is known that in a rank two free group any primitive element is conjugate either to a palindrome or to the product of two palindromes, but known iteration schemes for ...
متن کاملDiscreteness Criteria and the Hyperbolic Geometry of Palindromes
We consider non-elementary representations of two generator free groups in PSL(2,C), not necessarily discrete or free, G = 〈A,B〉. A word in A and B, W (A,B), is a palindrome if it reads the same forwards and backwards. A word in a free group is primitive if it is part of a minimal generating set. Primitive elements of the free group on two generators can be identified with the positive rational...
